If there is a wrestling record at CVHS, Gary Brundirks is likely the coach behind it. He has been Head Coach since 1980 after serving as assistant for five years. In that time, he has led the Big Reds to 208 dual meet victories, six District titles, two Regional crowns, an Oakland "A" Conference championship, and a MAC Red title. Amazingly, he has coached every state place winner in the program's history, leading wrestlers to ten state tournament medals, and brought CV its only Macomb County title in 2002. In 1992 Brundirks was voted WDIV "Teacher of the Year" by his peers at CVHS. In 1995, 2002, and 2003, his Big Red team was Macomb County Class A "Team of the Year," with the 2002 and 2003 teams making the state Elite Eight quarterfinals. Wrestlers have qualified for state 29 times during Brundirks' tenure, more than any other coach in program history. In 2002-3, his Big Reds shattered the school record for dual meet victories by racking up 22 wins, and he and his staff was named Macomb County Coaches of the Year. Brundirks is a graduate of Sterling Heights Stevenson High School ('70) and of the University of Wisconsin/Oshkosh, where he wrestled and played football for 4 years.

What is Wrestling? The following statement was given by Olympian Ben Peterson on what wrestling meant to him. I value these words and would like to share them with you. Wrestling to me demands the utmost expression of the best discipline and courage in a man, and the driving out of fear, hesitancy, and laziness. Since man is naturally bent toward laziness, fear of the unknown and self-indulgence, he needs a way of changing these trends. Wrestling has been such an arena for many a grateful young man; each one striving to rid himself of the harmful habits of men around him and the cowardly characteristics within him, each one seeking to mature his God-given abilities within. Wrestling cannot change the nature of man. But it can be used to bring out qualities that are intended to lead, encourage, challenge, and entertain others. I am thankful to God for the sport of wrestling and the maturing effects in my life and in the lives of many young men.
